Because the United States Air Force Academy stands out as an extremely competitive institution, the application process is in-depth and rigorous. First, a candidate must determine whether he or she is eligible to attend. Applicants who are U.S. citizens must be unmarried and between the ages of 17 and 23 as of July 1st of their admission years. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens may apply, but they compete for fewer slots.
Upon determining eligibility, applicants must contact an admissions liaison officer (ALO) and complete a candidate questionnaire that covers academic history and personal details. The candidate can then seek out a nomination from an authorized entity; for most candidates, this includes Senators, U.S. Representatives, and the Vice President of the United States. Candidates must also supply transcripts, teacher evaluations, and an extracurricular activities record. In addition, each potential cadet completes a physical fitness assessment, in-person interview, and written essay.
