Founded in 1956, the college used a local high school for night classes. SJC moved to permanent quarters in 1965. Over the years, SJC experienced rapid growth; enrollment has expanded from 25 in 1956 to more than 5,500 students, taught by some 280 faculty in 119 majors.
One of many useful student services is the Center for Student Engagement, which offers tutorial assistance online and in person. The Native American Center provides information about enrollment and scholarships at SJC, and assists with career plans.
Funding sources include the New Mexico Lottery, the SJC Foundation, and the Possible Dream scholarships. Additionally, work-study arrangements enable students to pursue their education while they work on campus or in community service.
