A retired officer and chaplain for the U.S. Air Force, Father Thomas Maikowski currently serves as an administrator of a Catholic church in the southwestern United States. Father Thomas Maikowski also has spent more than two decades as a U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) admission liaison officer (ALO) to help students manage the application process.
Along with the ALO program, the USAFA maintains the Summer Seminar program, which gives high school students an opportunity to personally experience the academy. The program is primarily intended for students who are entering their last year of high school and who have an interest in learning more about the challenges and rewards of cadet life.
During the six-day seminar, students are dispersed into groups, or “elements,” that are led by an upper-class cadet who acts as a mentor throughout the seminar. The program participants experience life as a fourth-class cadet by living and eating in cadet facilities, engaging in physical activities like a Candidate Fitness Assessment, and participating in workshops administered by academy faculty. Through the workshops, participants can explore different academic majors, with workshop topics ranging from humanities to aeronautics.
